Government could be calling all homeowners to meet new minimum energy efficiency standards before selling their homes

Pressure groups are calling on the British Government to introduce new laws, forcing homeowners to meet minimum energy efficiency standards for their properties before putting them on the market.

Cutting greenhouse gas emissions from homes is a key part of government policy for combatting climate change. But the Conservation of Energy (ACE) and the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) has warned that the Government is not meeting this.

A recent study has recommended introducing minimum energy efficiency standards when property is put on the market and tightening new building standards so they are near zero carbon.

ACE argues a programme of technical and financial assistance should help property owners meet standards for energy efficiency when they sell their buildings.

Craig Smith, Director Copperfield Windows, said: “This is intriguing as it highlights the critical importance of energy efficient home improvements in the UK’s efforts to tackle climate change.

“Placing a new requirement on homeowners to meet new minimum home energy efficiency standards before selling their properties would, however, need to sit within a wider framework and energy policy, with incentives to do so."

Research reveals that market forces have already made energy efficiency a key priority for house hunters. A study by GoCompare earlier this year reported that in the face of rising household bills, 74% of respondents said that double glazing was their top priority.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, heat lost through windows accounts for around 25 per cent of the total energy lost from your home. It suggests that new windows and doors could save homeowners up to £160 a year in heating bills.

Copperfield Windows supplies plenty of energy efficient and low maintenance windows and doors throughout Coventry each year, making homes not only warmer but more importantly secure.

This includes an extensive range of low maintenance and energy efficient PVC-U windows

Craig, concluded: “The idea of new energy efficiency products be a must have requirement when selling properties is a long way off but we all know that improving the energy efficiency of your property makes it more sellable but also
delivers immediate benefits."
