How secure is my UPVC door?

 

Craig Smith, Director Copperfield warns that early generation PVC-U doors, could be the weak-point in thousands of homes across Coventry.

 

Recent studies from National Statistics showed that there were 701,000 burglaries reported in England and Wales last year. Drill down into the figures and that’s 29 burglaries for every 1,000 households. A large amount of these burglaries are committed by forcing old rotten or poorly maintained windows or doors.

 

So, what are they and what can you do about them?

 

  1. Kick-through of UPVC door panels

 

PVC panel doors appear a pretty secure option. When they were first introduced (a time now immortalised in the BBC’s new comedy White Gold) it appeared that they represented a major step forward in door security.

 

PVC-U doors in comparison introduced multi-point locking.

 

This mechanism was and remains a major innovation in door security. Rather than relying on just one or two bolts, PVC-U doors - and today’s high security composite doors which have since followed them fire a series of bolts and hooks into the door frame, locking the sash and door together in a vice-like grip, as you lift the handle.

 

This is an inherent fault in the manufacture of early generation PVC doors. Welds weren’t strong enough and the panel wasn’t fixed securely enough to the sash (the opening part of the door) frame.

 

It’s obvious that it doesn’t matter how well the sash frame is fixed to the outer frame, if a simple kick can knock out the middle. Yet thousands of these doors were installed nationwide. And because they don’t rot and because they’re low maintenance there are thousands still in service today.



  1. The PVC door mark II and cylinder bumping

 

Second generation UPVC doors addressed these problems, introducing structural reinforcements, which withstand huge forces. Does this work? No!

 

PVC doors were a cutting-edge product. The use of PVC as a low maintenance door material was new, it’s locking mechanism was new. And as is so often the way in new technologies from new model cars to tumble dryers, it’s only after they have been in use for a little while that vulnerabilities become exposed.

 

As a cutting edge product they used a new type of door locking cylinder. It’s important to note that we’re not talking about the locking mechanism which shoots multiple hooks and bolts to fix the sash to the frame but the ‘lock’ or the cylinder which you insert the key into to fix that mechanism in place.

 

Euro Cylinder locks have been widely used by the UK double-glazing industry – not just in UPVC doors but also early generation composite doors - however, an inherent weakness in their design means that they are highly vulnerable to attack

 

This includes a method which leaves no obvious signs of forced entry and which could mean that your home insurance company may not pay out for any losses.

 

The ‘bumping’ method uses a skeleton key readily available and bought cheaply over the Internet to gain access to the cylinder lock mechanism, knocking the pins which lock the cylinder and door mechanism, out of place.

 

A second method, ‘snapping’ which forces cylinders is now beginning to rival the number of break-ins through bumping. Handles are removed and the protruding part of the cylinder is snapped either through the force of an impact or the use of tools, commonly mole grips.  

 

 

What can I do to improve the security of my PVC door?

 

If you have an older PVC-U door, there’s very little that you can do to prevent the panel from being kicked out. You could screw plywood across the inside of the panel but it’s not going to look particularly nice.

 

You would also need to get a locksmith to change the door cylinder to an anti-bump/anti-snap upgrade.

With the costs associated with this, it’s only going to cost you a little more to buy a brand new energy efficient and secure uPVC door or composite door.
